The next note I have removed the page Segu-info.com.ar, an excellent site devoted to security, written in our language and developed by an expert who had the pleasure of knowing as an instructor in the CISSP Bootcamp 2008, Cristian Borghello (CISSP).

Below is a list of services NOT know who you used to hang in the electronic messengers. Also, it is an explanation of each of them, through sites that have investigated each case.

While many of these sites say they do not store email addresses and personal data that can not be proved and it is always advisable not use these services because of the unreliable nature of them.

We must remember that these places are usually a hoax for email and personal data (at least) using Social Engineering .

At What Bmi Do You Stop Having Periods

Logical Volumes (LVM)

Because I have received many inquiries about LVM I decided to do a paragraph on this subject more interesting.
First of all, try to give a brief expliación that is a logical volume.

LVM is an implementation of a logical volume manager for the Linux kernel. Was originally written in 1998 by Heinz Mauelshagen, which was based on the Veritas volume manager used in HP-UX systems.

LVM includes many of the features expected of a volume manager, including:

* Resize logical groups
* Resizing logical volumes
* read-only snapshots (LVM2 provides read and write)
* Logical Volume RAID0

Features

* The logical volume management provides a high level view on a computer storage instead of the traditional view of disks and partitions.
* Storage volumes under the control of LVM can be resized and moved at will, although this may need to update your system tools.
* LVM also allows management to user-defined groups, allowing the system administrator to deal with volumes called, for example, "sales" or "development", rather than physical device names such as "sda" or "sdb"

* LVM is widely used in Unix systems as AIX, HP-UX or Solaris , allowing the resizing of volumes, physical space allocated to different volumes, regardless of FileSystem, etc..
While such implementations are always made in large systems that require a dedicated management and 24x7 services to be provided, it is interesting to make a similar home, taking into account all the benefits discussed above

LVM consists of three parts The first is the Volume Group which his name is randomly assigned (Purchases, Sales, IT, etc) and is responsible for being the "container" of the other components of the architecture. Physical Volume
The device name is assigned to the physical device (/ dev/hda1). The Logical Volume
(LV) is the "device" logical to be constituted by parts of the physical volumes.
In the graph below you can see how the whole architecture is

VG (Volume Group)
PV (Physical Volume)
LV (Logical Volume)

As can be seen in the example of PV3 clearly independent of the physical volume, using this technology, you can assign parts of a PV to any LV, resize and reallocate according to needs.

This chart we can see how different technologies can be assigned to the different filesystems.

/ opt / media => XFS
/ mnt / backup => Reiserfs
/ home / share => Reiserfs

here's how to create a logical volume. It should be noted that such instructions have been tested on a RHEL 5.2 and Ubuntu 8.04, and for other distributions, check the documentation before starting the process.

1) Initialization of the device

We as physical volume / dev/sda1

# pvcreate / dev/sda1
Physical volume "/ dev/sda1" successfully created

2) Creating the Volume Group

assign "Shopping" as a VG name

# vgcreate Shopping / dev/sda1
Volume group "Shopping" successfully created

3) Creating the Logical Volume #

lvcreate-L1G-n lv1 Shopping
lvcreate - doing automatic backup of "Shopping"
lvcreate - logical volume "/ dev/Compras/lv1" successfully created

(Where -L1G is assigned to the LV size In this case 1GB. With the option-n assign the name to Logical volume. Finally we pass the name of the Volume Group which will assign the LV).

4) Formatting the Logical Volume

At this point we have created the VG, PV and LV, we now need to format it and assign a

  FileSystem # mkfs.jfs / dev/compras/lv1

If everything went While we should be able to mount the device as any volume and write about it.

  # mount-t jfs / dev/Compras/lv1 / mnt / Data

just announced the launch of the first Alpha version of Ubuntu 8.10 "Ibex Intrepix" officially begins with the publication cycle of "milestones" (milestones) in the development of the next major update of this very popular distribution. The main changes from the previous "Hardy Heron" is a reintegration Debian changes and a preliminary version of the Kernel 2.6.26. This reintegration not only brings many new versions of included software packages, but many others are completely new.

Plans for the release of "Intrepid Ibex" include some very interesting things such as: a new graphical tool to create images of USB installation, a simple script to create virtual machine with a web frontend, improved performance of ubiquity and apt when installing many packages from a DVD, and many others.

Ulteo Virtual Desktop: your Linux Applications on Windows

not long ago was unveiled the new project of Ex-Madrake Guy Gaël Duval, in which he claimed he was going to achieve extreme simplicity in a new operating system and break the barriers for end users. Sometime Gaël was intended only to develop a Web operating system, knowing that there were some present in the market that have passed through the hands of users unnoticed. However, the project was aimed to achieve a product that offers the people of Ulteo, Ulteo Online Desktop
This "Web Desktop" can find many of our favorite applications like OpenOffice, The Gimp, Kopete, Firefox, etc. . Notably, this Web OS is based on java, so you must have installed the Sun VM on your computer and on the other hand also I must clarify that being a web operating system, the response time not very good, but it is the best example of a system of this type.

Here I leave some screenprints of my Ulteo Online Desktop session

Desktop

Firefox running them in the Web Desktop

Editing an image transferred from my local machine, with The Gimp

On the other hand, another product that has caught much attention, and which I decided to spend some time, was Ulteo Virtual Desktop. This software allows to launch applications, GNU / Linux system Windows XP or Vista. The applications run nearly as fast as any Microsoft application Nativi of enabling users to work with them regardless of operating system.
According to the website of the project, these are some of the applications supported by Ulteo Virtual Desktop:

  • Firefox web browser enabled with Flash & Java
  • The full OpenOffice.org office suite That Can deal with your MS
  • Kpdf Office documents to deal with your PDF documents
  • Kopete: the multi-Instant Messaging Software That Supports MSN and Skype
  • Other protocols
  • Thunderbird + Enigmail (so you CAN encrypt your emails!)
  • Gimp and Digikam to manage your pictures
  • Inkscape and Scribus to create great graphics and newspapers
  • and ... Many Others!
and equipment requirements are:

Ulteo Virtual Desktop Requires a PC (x86-based) with a modern 32-bit CPU and at least 512MB RAM. At least 4 GB of free HD space is required. A PDF reader is needed. For a Better experience, we recommend a DualCore CPU and 1GB RAM. Ulteo Virtual Desktop has-been tested successfully on Windows XP and Windows Vista (32-bit only for now).

Another interesting product of this project is Ulteo Documents Synchronizer allows us to make backups of your files online and have them available at any time.

To conclude we can say that the Ulteo team is trying to take his place in the market for simple and reliable Linux solutions, providing basic utilities for every user and other aggregates that can provide a complete solution regardless of whether our system is operating Linux, MS or a simple Web Browser.

Do psychopaths use Slackware?

got this news from our friends VivaLinux.com.ar
worth noting that I am at rest a Slackware fan, but it was a very interesting news.

From Brazil the blogosphere reports on a sensational story that appeared on Time H site that says the police caught a murderer "coward" for a young (16) in Nova Iguacu "hidden in the house of his parents." The criminal then confessed that he stabbed his victim at the end of last February and then played with the body "a bit." He also reportedly said that he drank the blood the unfortunate teenager.

But of course, most importantly for this story is the Linux distribution of choice for this psycho ...

OpenOffice 2.4 - Tested by AL3

We have heard much in recent weeks on Openoffice 2.4 and after the release of the new release of our favorite office suite, I decided to download and try it on my laptop.

below details the installation steps should be performed to reach fruition.

The manors to install Ubuntu 7.10 are:

has listings First check in synaptic package in one of their repositories or by

# apt-cache show
OpenOffice 2.4 In pregnant
only remains to remove all packages related to Openoffice 2.0 and then install the new version.

If not that simple, take the following steps:

1) Download the required package for your distribution from the following Link (English version).

2) Uninstall all packages from the previous version (from Synaptic or console).

3) Unzip the downloaded package (tar xvzf package_name)

4) Enter OOH680_m12_native_packed-1_es.9286/DEBS directory (The directory is generated after decompression the above)

5) Install all packages issue the following statement

# sudo dpkg-i * deb

This will install all packages. deb in that directory listings.

6) Finally in the directory OOH680_m12_native_packed-1_es.9286/DEBS/desktop-integration /

forfeited

# sudo dpkg-i * deb

This latest package will allow us to configure the Ubuntu apliaciones menu.

After the suite fully installed Openoffice 2.4, I recommend that from synaptic seek to have installed JRE version. To run smoothly Openoffice should install the JRE version 1.6.

Now to try our new purchase!

NOTE: If running OpenOffice shows you an error message of the Java virtual machine, make a click on "OK", this will allow them to enter the application, then go to tools => OpenOffice => Java and there select the previously installed JRE or held.

For the performance, note that has improved dramatically, the Execution / Openoffice any package is almost instantaneous from the 30 or 45 seconds that lingered in version 2.0
have added several new features and has worked on aesthetics applications.
Integration with GoogleDocs (downloading the corresponding Pluging) works great as several other plugins as OpenGL transitions gives us Impress.

To conclude we can say that this new version of OpenOffice has left his predecessors in the past and has overcome, notably, other office suites.

5 reasons for starting the revolution

Especially after the release of Ubuntu 8.04 LTS , and although it is a very particular "VAR Guy" explains why Ubuntu will become a hit on servers, desktops and mobile devices in the coming years, and lists 5 reasons why you believe that this will happen sooner or later:

  1. The Debacle of Windows Vista .
Vista is big, bloated, slow and cumbersome. Ubuntu Linux is fast, modular and flexible. A few million regular users have discovered their power. Millions more will discover it through install fests, word-of-mouth and Dell.
  2. miscalculation of Red Hat and Novell . Both
bet a lot on the servers. Red Hat completely ignored the desktop for years. While Microsoft faces on the desktop, Canonical was the rare company of Linux took a step forward and pointed to a consumer-focused design.
  3. Server Consolidation.
If Sun, which began certifying its servers to Ubuntu, only a moderate gain momentum with this initiative, its competitors jump into this market. But that will take time.
  4. Software as a Service and Open Source .
The power of the Source as a Service (SaaS) and open source are already in the mainstream. If Canonical is adding support ISVs (Independent Software Vendors) for your operating system, the market will move in the direction of Ubuntu. Intel
  5. .
Despite its relationship with Microsoft, Red Hat and Novell, Intel found time and money to work closely with Ubuntu Linux, particularly in launching a mobile version. Despite Google Android and the iPhone, Ubuntu Mobile will find its place in such devices silencionamente.

Ksplice Ubuntu patches Kernel without restarting your Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop

Ksplice allows server administrators to apply security patches to Linux kernel without rebooting the system then. Ksplice takes as input the source code format change to make unified diff and applies the corresponding kernel is running. The running kernel does not need to be prepared before any way.

To be specific, the design of Ksplice is limited to patches that do not introduce semantic changes to data structures, but most security patches do not make such changes.

A test with security patches Linux kernel from May 2005 through December 2007 found that Ksplice could automatically apply the 84% them.

Design Features

  • Works with most existing Linux 2.6.x kernel versions (no advance preparation or modifications required)
  • Works with most existing kernel configurations (works best with CONFIG_KALLSYMS , but Ksplice can apply many patches without this option)
  • Can handle patches to kernel modules and kernel assembly code
  • Can handle patches containing symbols that are not in the kernel symbol table (symbols can be discovered from running code)
  • Works best if provided with the exact compiler and linker used to compile the original kernel (when the original toolchain is not available, Ksplice will protect against differences in behavior between the original and the toolchain toolchain Used to create the update, and will abort the upgrade Ksplice IF NECESSARY)

The creator of Tetris, against the free software Sun acquired MySQL

Remember the good Alexey Pajitnov, the Russian who made us break the kibble with his great invention, the Tetris?

Well, it seems that behind the face of good type, Alexey this proved to be flower bug.

The thing is more or less like this: I did an interview (one among many). So far, so good. At one point, the interviewer asked "What do you think Movement for Free Software? "Pajitnov replied:" Well I'll tell my opinion on the free software that should never have existed today and should not exist. And I'll tell you why: it destroys the free software market. Where the efforts of groups people will build market opportunities, wealth and prosperity, people get irresponsible and creates alternative developments that plunge companies. And that's not good for the development of technology, free software has no market projection does not create wealth is only a sample of sterile rebellion. " Very hard, right?

The thing did not end there. The entreviststador respectfully Asked about companies like Red Hat or Oracle, who found a business niche distributing its products under free licenses and then selling maintenance. Alexey said: "We again same. I is speaking minority of cases. FOSS belongs to a state mental rebellious teenager and nihilistic something that leads nowhere. It happened to me with Tetris, I made him and as there was no chance of doing anything with the game, handed it to my friends casually. And, after all, limit the possibility of making a business r May.

To top it, Pajitnov was consulted on the ideas of Richard Stallman , a parent of Free Software and the creator of Tetris said: "... Stallman's ideas belong to a bygone era in which I made sense: in the seventies and eighties, and I I participated in that attitude when I was young. Then there was no business opportunity and it seemed logical to share the developments in the university to grow. Today there is a market and we have grown . "

With his statements, Pajitnov not only proved to be a technological elite, driven by its own mercantilist interests, but also has no idea of \u200b\u200bwhat free software is downgraded to category that could encompass such reprehensible activities such as piracy or rape.

should be reminded that Mr. Pajitnov (which has run like a dinosaur rather than a computer guru) that exist thanks to Free Software projects such as Wikipedia where information has been liberalized allowing any user to contribute to enrich human knowledge. Thanks to the Free Software computer program can be improved and optimized in a way that a company could ever imagine, based on the knowledge of thousands of users. And thanks to free software computer has advanced to what has become today.

After reading this, are you still wanting to play Tetris?
